It combines in a single piece of equipment a broadband modem and
a USB/Ethernet router. The latter enables a PC and games console
to share a broadband line at the same time and without the need
to switch cables. It should not be confused with a simple 'router'
which does not usually include a broadband modem.
The 'one box' solution means an easier and quicker set-up, and
fewer trailing cables than with separates. Also, as it works independently
of your PC, you can console-game without needing your PC switched
on. Plus it contains a firewall to help keep your data and privacy
safe from Internet hackers and data thieves.
Can I use my existing broadband modem rather than buy the recommended
modem/router?
Whilst technically possible, BT Yahoo! Broadband does not recommend
or provide technical support for connecting a console directly
to a home PC or an existing ADSL modem. This is because it is complex
to set up and support, requires the installation of an Ethernet
card in the PC, and the mastering of complex Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) software within Windows. It is also inconvenient
to use.
As an existing broadband customer, what and how do I order?
PC owners will need to buy the SpeedTouch 530 USB/Ethernet modem/router,
Mac owners the Ethernet/Ethernet SpeedTouch 510 modem/router. You
